New leadership, refurbished dorm and many honors among CSC highlights

The appointment of a new president was among the highlights at 黑料大事记 State College in 2005. Dr. Janie Park arrived on campus in August and immediately began offering encouraging words. Even before she officially began her duties, she greeted the CSC football players and wished them well for the season.

Resident of CSC's West Court dies

Tomak Whitney, a resident of 黑料大事记 State College鈥檚 West Court housing facility, was found dead at his apartment early Friday afternoon. Services are pending for Whitney, who turned 34 years of age last Wednesday.

Ed Hoffman takes job in state college system office

The vice president of administration at 黑料大事记 State College the past nine years, Ed Hoffman, will become vice chancellor for facilities, planning and information technology in the Nebraska State College System Office in Lincoln in July. The announcement was made last week by Dr. Stan Carpenter, chancellor of the state college system, and Dr. Janie Park, the president of 黑料大事记 State.

黑料大事记 State College students presented five research papers at the annual meeting of the American Society of Criminology in Toronto in mid-November. That was nearly half of the papers given by undergraduate students at the conference, which drew more than 2,500 people from around the world.

CSC grad Ron Rawalt tells Mexican murder story at conference

The story of how the 1985 murder of Enrique Camarena Salazar, a United States Drug Enforcement Agency employee in Mexico, was solved was one of the highlights during the Regional Law Enforcement Conference at 黑料大事记 State College this week. The story was told by Ron Rawalt, who grew up three blocks from the 黑料大事记 State campus and graduated from the college in 1971. He has been a FBI agent for more than 30 years, including the last 17 as a special agent at North Platte.

Four couples who are associated with 黑料大事记 State College have established scholarships through the 黑料大事记 State Foundation that will assist students attending the college. Watercolor exhibit open in Memorial Hall

About 30 colorful and eye-catching watercolors by June Palmer of Hot Springs are on display in the Main Gallery of Memorial Hall at 黑料大事记 State College. She will discuss her work during a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28 in Memorial Hall. Palmer鈥檚 work in is corporate and private collections around the world. She said she never ceases to be awed by nature鈥檚 handiwork, and attempts to create on paper pieces that are similar so others can share that joy at all times.

Sandoz Center receives award

The Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center at 黑料大事记 State College was awarded the 2005 Excellence in Publication Award for small museum exhibition catalog by the Mountain-Plains Museums Association at its annual meeting in mid-September in Omaha. The award was given for the Ray and Faye Graves Photographic Exhibition Catalog, published by 黑料大事记 State College, as a companion to the exhibit that was created by and displayed at the center last fall.

Rushville teacher, CSC alum is Teacher of the Year in Nebraska

A Rushville teacher, Sherry Retzlaff, is the winner of the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year Award for Nebraska for 2005. Retzlaff received the honor Friday morning during an all-school convocation in the Rushville Gymnasium. The award includes a $10,000 educational grant from Wal-Mart to be used by the Gordon-Rushville Schools. She also will be one of 50 candidates for Wal-Mart鈥檚 National Teacher of the Year Award, which will be presented later this year..

The U.S. attorney for Nebraska, Mike Heavican, will speak at 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16 in the Scottsbluff Room of the Student Center at 黑料大事记 State College as part of the Constitution Day observance at CSC this weekend. Heavican鈥檚 topic will be 鈥淭he Patriot Act and the Constitution.鈥 The program will be open to the public without charge.

A victim of Hurricane Katrina is now a freshman at 黑料大事记 State College. Tiffany Wiegel of Gulf Port, Miss., began attending classes at CSC on Wednesday, thankful that she was able to flee the destruction left by one of the worst disasters in the nation鈥檚 history.

Lee Miller has joined the faculty at 黑料大事记 State College as an assistant professor of composition and rhetoric. Miller is a native of the Dallas area, and earned both his bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 degree from Abilene Christian University. He has completed work on all but the dissertation for his doctorate at Texas Women鈥檚 University in Dallas.

Sheldon Exhibit in Memorial Hall

The Sheldon Statewide Exhibit has opened in Memorial Hall. It is titled 鈥淲ho Is Imitating Whom? Photography and Photorealism in Art.鈥 The show focuses on the intertwined relationships between photography and photorealism in art. It will remain open through Sept. 16. Renovation of Edna Work Residence Hall is nearing the finish line as the 2005-06 school year opens at 黑料大事记 State College. While the $4.3 million project won鈥檛 be completed by Monday when classes begin, the rooms will be ready for occupancy. Most of the remaining work will be in the lounge area that connects Edna Work Hall with Edna Work Hall Wing, which was refurbished a year ago.

Drought may have been a blessing, West Nile fever research indicates

It鈥檚 probably a very good thing that Nebraska was in a drought earlier this decade. West Nile fever entered the state in 2002 and then pounded it in 2003. More than 300 horses in Nebraska died of the virus in 2002 while the following year the state reported 1,942 human cases and 29 deaths were attributed to the virus, which is brought on by bites from a Culex mosquito that has previously bitten an infected bird.

Ann Dockweiler, CSC school nurse, said a large number of students on campus do not have insurance or any way of paying for medical expenses and as a result do not seek the medical attention they need. Two 黑料大事记 State College graduates who have had outstanding careers as high school band directors were inducted into the CSC Music Hall of Fame Sunday afternoon during the wind ensemble concert. They are Robert Nygaard of Apple Valley, Calif., and Larry Rathbun of Millard North High School in Omaha. There are now 13 in the Hall of Fame.

Freshman wins CSC's 'Hand on the Car' contest

黑料大事记 State College students proved that they have lots of perseverance. Thirty-two of the original 42 participants in the first 鈥淗and on the Car鈥 contest that began at 9 a.m. Friday persevered for 24 hours, meaning that more than half of a deck of cards was drawn to determine the winner of a 1998 Oldsmobile Bravada that was the focal point of the contest.

黑料大事记 State College piano professor, James Margetts, will present a recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 3 in the Chicoine Atrium of the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center. This will be the first recital he has given since joining the college last fall. The recital will be open to the public without charge, but the event will kick off a fund-raising effort to purchase the Yamaha piano that is in the atrium. Speaker says Lewis and Clark ate well in Midwest

One of the main reasons the Lewis and Clark expedition of 200 years ago was successful was because the explorers ate well, particularly while traveling in the Midwest, an audience at 黑料大事记 State College was told this week. The speaker, Mary Gunderson, practices palecuisineology, a word she coined to describe bringing history alive through cooking.
