Early Childhood Conference set for February

Participants of a ���ϴ��¼� State College conference will again learn ways to improve their child care and education skills. ���ϴ��¼� State College’s 18th Excellence in Early Childhood Conference is Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23-24, 2007.

CSC to close for national day of mourning

Clarinet article published

The November issue of “The Instrumentalist” contains an article by ���ϴ��¼� State College woodwind instructor Carola Winkle. The article entitled “Good Clarinet Tone” focuses on basic embouchure and playing habits that are essential in achieving a good sound on the clarinet. Published in Chicago, “The Instrumentalist” is often regarded as the foremost journal in instrumental music.

Math professor still missing

The case of the missing mathematics professor at ���ϴ��¼� State College entered its second week early on Tuesday with still no clues concerning his whereabouts. Dr. Steve Haataja (pronounced Hah-dee-ya) was reported missing late Monday, Dec. 4 and has not been seen or heard from since.

CSC team wins rangeland cup

A ���ϴ��¼� State College team recently won possession of the Rangeland Cup traveling trophy by placing first in competition at the Wyoming Section of the Society for Range Management meetings in Sheridan.

John Harms to speak at ���ϴ��¼� State commencement

Business Development Center reopens at CSC

Suspense-filled play at CSC this weekend

A story about a blind date that goes bad will be unveiled this weekend when the ���ϴ��¼� State College Theatre Department presents “Boy Gets Girl” in the Black Box Theater of Memorial Hall. Avis Nelson dies in ���ϴ��¼�

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Chamberlain Chapel in ���ϴ��¼� for Avis Nelson, widow of Dr. Edwin C. Nelson, who was president of ���ϴ��¼� State College for 18 years between 1967 and 1986. She died Saturday evening at Crestview Manor in ���ϴ��¼� at age 85.

Students give CSC health professions programs high marks

���ϴ��¼� State College’s health professions program received high marks from current students last week during Health Professions Day, but the approximately 200 students from 30 regional high schools in attendance were told they will have to work hard to succeed in the program.

Ogallala Commons conference at CSC on Wednesday

Sandoz Center events added to Oktoberfest

Tickets will be available at the door for the annual Oktoberfest sponsored by the Campus Historical Forum at ���ϴ��¼� State College on Tuesday, Oct. 10 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Center. Sixty royalty candidates at ���ϴ��¼� State

Sixty students have been nominated for homecoming royalty at ���ϴ��¼� State College. Homecoming will be Saturday, Oct. 7. Speaker tells crowd to appreciate America

A large crowd at ���ϴ��¼� State College got a pep talk Wednesday night on what it means to be an American. Betty Nguyen (pronounced Win), an anchor for CNN’s weekend programs, said there are thousands of people around the world who would give anything to come to the United States. She noted that the United States is the land of opportunity and freedom, and people who live in countries where it is almost impossible to break the cycle of poverty are desperate to come to America.

CSC graduate receives American Star teaching honor

A Hemingford teacher who graduated from ���ϴ��¼� State College received a special award last week. Cindy Lanik was honored by the U.S. Department of Education as Nebraska’s American Star of Teaching for 2006. This is the third year the award has been given. It goes to just one educator in each state. There reportedly were about 4,000 nominees in Nebraska.

Carola Winkle is president of International Music Camp

A member of the ���ϴ��¼� State College music faculty, Carola Winkle, is the new president of the International Music Camp. The camp is located in the International Peace Gardens on the border between North Dakota and Manitoba.

CNN anchor to speak at CSC

A news anchor for CNN, Betty Nguyen (pronounced Win), will be the first speaker of the fall semester in the Distinguished Speaker Series at ���ϴ��¼� State College. Her presentation will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30 in the Student Center. Her topic will be “Diversity: Don’t Hide From It, Celebrate It.”

New playground equipment at Child Development Center

The children of the ���ϴ��¼� State College Child Development Center have one more reason to be excited about attending the daycare facility. New playground equipment was installed at the center last week.

Graves Lecture Series to open at CSC

A lecture series named in honor of Dr. Dorset Graves, professor emeritus at ���ϴ��¼� State College, will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29 in Room 108 of the Reta King Library at CSC. CSC to host economic development event

Applications are being received for the HomeTown Competitiveness Academy that will be hosted by ���ϴ��¼� State College on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 12-14. The event will assist rural communities in becoming active in HTC, an economic development initiative that has generated widespread interest and sparked numerous success stories in Nebraska.

12 ���ϴ��¼� State degrees available via Internet

Thanks to the accelerated nature of the “information superhighway,” no longer does distance between home and school keep people from earning a degree at ���ϴ��¼� State College. This fall, all coursework for 12 degree programs will become available from ���ϴ��¼� State in an online format.

Orientation at CSC on Wednesday

The third and final on-campus orientation of the summer at ���ϴ��¼� State College will be Wednesday, July 19. About 65 students and numerous parents are expected to participate.

New math professor hired

A new assistant professor of mathematics has been hired at ���ϴ��¼� State College. He is Steven Haataja, who is completing work on his doctorate at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln this summer. He replaces Dr. Tim Hardy, who was at ���ϴ��¼� State this past year, but is moving to Wayne State.

A new assistant professor of educational administration will be joining the ���ϴ��¼� State College faculty when classes begin on Monday, Aug. 21. He is Dr. Arthur Borgemenke, who was born in Ohio, but has lived most of his life in El Paso, Texas.

Fewer mosquitoes this year, but West Nile still a threat

Undoubtedly because of the drought, there are fewer mosquitoes in most of western Nebraska this summer, but West Nile fever is still a threat to humans, according to Dr. Randy Lawson, a biology professor who is involved in researching the malady for the fourth consecutive year.

A ���ϴ��¼� State College graduate who plans to return to the ���ϴ��¼� area in early 2007 has been appointed to the Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees by Gov. Dave Heineman.

Deans appointed at ���ϴ��¼� State College

The deans who will head the three schools at ���ϴ��¼� State College have been selected following national searches. They include Dr. Margaret Crouse, who has been associated with ���ϴ��¼� State since 1979 and has been a dean 11 years. She will lead the School of Education, Human Performance, Counseling, Psychology and Social Work.

Range course at CSC this week

Thirty-two students from various backgrounds are on the campus of ���ϴ��¼� State College this week to study range management. The 2006 Nebraska Range Shortcourse is presented by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, ���ϴ��¼� State College and the Nebraska section of the Society for Range Management. The program features 18 instructors, including experts from higher education, state and federal government, conservation organizations and ranching.

Online course features 'Nebraska-land writers'

A course that features the works of Nebraska writers will be offered online by ���ϴ��¼� State College in July. The course, which begins July 3 and ends July 28, will feature short works by many popular Nebraska authors, including Mari Sandoz, Willa Cather, Ted Kooser, Wright Morris, Weldon Kees, Loren Eiseley and John Neihardt.

The Fantasticks' opening at Post Playhouse

One of America’s endearing musicals, “The Fantasticks,” opens this weekend at the Post Playhouse at Fort Robinson. CSC professor receives state award

A professor of family and consumer sciences at ���ϴ��¼� State College, Dr. Norma Nealeigh, recently received the Outstanding Service Award from the Nebraska Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher Association at its conference in Kearney. Tracy J. Shuck, director of dining services at ���ϴ��¼� State College, has been certified in the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation’s Foodservice Management Professional certification program. Noble moving from city to college budget posts

Dave Noble, the finance officer for the City of ���ϴ��¼� the past 10 years, has resigned to become comptroller at ���ϴ��¼� State College.

Bug Brigade off and rolling at CSC

Opal's Baby' to open Post Playhouse this weekend

The Post Playhouse at Fort Robinson opens for its 39th season this weekend with the comedy, “Opal’s Baby.” The first round of shows will be presented Friday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 4. After a dark night on Monday, June 5, the show will be staged again Tuesday through Saturday, June 6-10 at 8 p.m., and Sunday, June 11 at 4 p.m.

Energy-related projects added spice to CSC classes

Show raises cash for Habitat for Humanity

Many CSC students accepted by professional schools

Thirty-three ���ϴ��¼� State College students who are health professions majors have been accepted to attend professional schools, beginning this fall. Nineteen of the students are in the Rural Health Opportunities Program that is a joint venture with the University of Nebraska Medical Center. One is in the High Plains Health Opportunities Program and will attend Creighton University. The others are “traditional” students. Most of them will attend UNMC.

CSC professor looking forward to more traveling

Dr. Allen Shepherd, who has taught history at ���ϴ��¼� State the past 34 years, is stepping down as a full-time faculty member at the end of the current semester to begin a phased retirement. He’ll teach selected upper level courses the next three summers, but he points out that he will have the remainder of the calendar free to explore more places and things.

HomeTown Competitiveness strategies outlined in Panhandle

Strategies that HomeTown Competitiveness has already used to help numerous rural communities throughout Nebraska were outlined Tuesday night to about 30 people who attended an informational meeting at ���ϴ��¼� State College. Jana Jensen of Bingham, an assistant development director for the Nebraska Community Foundation, said the program can help new businesses open and existing businesses expand, providing opportunities for youths to remain in their hometowns.

Earth Day celebration is Tuesday

Spring storm cuts attendance at CSC Scholastic Contest

Blowing snow greatly reduced the number of schools and students at the 46th annual Inter-High School Scholastic Contest at ���ϴ��¼� State College on Friday, but more than 800 students from 34 schools did take the tests. Most of the 18 schools that could not enter the event were from the south and southeast.

Wind ensemble concert is Monday night

Teacher Interview Day is March 31 at CSC

Rapid City man wins chess tourney

Future ���ϴ��¼� State College students will be able to register for courses and attend orientation sessions at seven sites throughout the Great Plains this month. Early Childhood Conference hears noted author

Those attending the 17th Excellence in Early Childhood Conference at ���ϴ��¼� State College last weekend received lots of guidance and counsel on how to deal with problems and conflict that may emerge among youths. Among the speakers was Barbara Coloroso, the author of three international bestselling books dealing with parenting, teaching, school discipline and non-violent conflict resolution.

Lindeken gift to be ���ϴ��¼� State's largest

Current and future students at ���ϴ��¼� State College will be among those benefiting from the generosity of a ���ϴ��¼� farm and ranch couple that is continuing several years after their deaths. The ���ϴ��¼� State Foundation has received a $450,000 payment from the settlement of the Bill and Frances Lindeken Estate. A second gift exceeding $500,000 is anticipated when the sale of the land located northeast of ���ϴ��¼� is finalized in one to three years.

Sherrill bringing '3 Redneck Tenors' to ���ϴ��¼�

���ϴ��¼� State College graduate Don Sherrill, an opera star for more than 20 years, has arranged for the show that he’s performing in to be presented in Memorial Hall at ���ϴ��¼� State College in late February. The production of “3 Redneck Tenors—a New Musical Adventure,” will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27.

Noted author to speak at CSC Wednesday night

Award-winning children’s book author David M. Schwartz will speak at 7 o’clock Wednesday, Feb. 15 in the Student Center Ballroom at ���ϴ��¼� State College. His appearance is being sponsored by the NeKota Reading Council, the ���ϴ��¼� Public Schools, the Dawes County Rural Schools and ���ϴ��¼� State. His talk will be open to the public without charge.

Award-winning play at CSC this weekend

The award-winning play, “Proof,” will be presented this weekend at ���ϴ��¼� State College. The performances will be in the Black Box Theatre of Memorial Hall at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 16-18 and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19. “Proof” won both the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for drama in 2001. It is one of just six plays to have won both honors in the past 25 years.

Theories of creation are topic of panel discussion

CSC senior gets special phone call

A senior at ���ϴ��¼� State College, Caleb Lund of Lusk, Wyo., recently received a special telephone call. He was notified that he had been accepted to enroll at the veterinary school at Colorado State University at Fort Collins this fall. The call came from one of the Colorado State deans before the letter telling him the good news had been mailed.

CSC to begin search for academic vice president

A national search is beginning at ���ϴ��¼� State College for a vice president of academic affairs. But the person selected for the position will no longer also be the head of enrollment management and student services, according to the president of ���ϴ��¼� State, Dr. Janie Park. The positions were combined in the late 1990s, but Park believes it will be beneficial for them to be separated.

Tickets going fast for Baxter Black

Students, others march for Martin Luther King

About 75 people gathered at ���ϴ��¼� this morning to participate in a walk to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. The group, which primarily consisted of students from ���ϴ��¼� State College and the Pine Ridge Job Corps center south of ���ϴ��¼�, marched about 13 blocks along Main Street from downtown to the college’s Student Center. King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech blared from a portable stereo as the group walked.

CSC adds vocal music professor

A new music professor has joined the faculty at the start of the spring semester at ���ϴ��¼� State College. She is Dr. Una Taylor, assistant professor of choral and vocal studies. Her duties will include directing the community chorus and forming a women’s vocal ensemble.
