The past year will undoubtedly go down as one of the most memorable in 黑料大事记 State College鈥檚 95-year history. If for no other reason, that鈥檚 true because of the wildfire that threatened the campus in late July when wind-whipped flames rushed over the pine-clad hills to the south and burned to the edge of the football practice fields.

Clarinet article published

The November issue of 鈥淭he Instrumentalist鈥 contains an article by 黑料大事记 State College woodwind instructor Carola Winkle. The article entitled 鈥淕ood Clarinet Tone鈥 focuses on basic embouchure and playing habits that are essential in achieving a good sound on the clarinet. Published in Chicago, 鈥淭he Instrumentalist鈥 is often regarded as the foremost journal in instrumental music.

The case of the missing mathematics professor at 黑料大事记 State College entered its second week early on Tuesday with still no clues concerning his whereabouts. Dr. Steve Haataja (pronounced Hah-dee-ya) was reported missing late Monday, Dec. 4 and has not been seen or heard from since.

Members of the team were Craig Eddie of Ogallala, Kimmy Mott of Fullerton, Dan Ruterbories of Ord and Jenny Walker of Edgemont, S.D. Their mentor is Dr. Chuck Butterfield, associate professor of agriculture at CSC. Business Development Center reopens at CSC

The Nebraska Business Development Center at 黑料大事记 State College is back in business. For more than a quarter century, 黑料大事记 State was the site of one of several NBDC satellite offices across the state, but a reduction in Nebraska鈥檚 share of federal funding for small business support and a reduction in the state budget caused the CSC center鈥檚 services to be discontinued in 2004. Avis Nelson dies in 黑料大事记

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Chamberlain Chapel in 黑料大事记 for Avis Nelson, widow of Dr. Edwin C. Nelson, who was president of 黑料大事记 State College for 18 years between 1967 and 1986. She died Saturday evening at Crestview Manor in 黑料大事记 at age 85.

Sandoz Center events added to Oktoberfest

Tickets will be available at the door for the annual Oktoberfest sponsored by the Campus Historical Forum at 黑料大事记 State College on Tuesday, Oct. 10 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Center. The tickets are $6 each. The food will include bratwurst, sauerkraut, potato salad, riva kuga and a beverage. Proceeds are often used to help Historical Forum members take a trip.

A large crowd at 黑料大事记 State College got a pep talk Wednesday night on what it means to be an American. Betty Nguyen (pronounced Win), an anchor for CNN鈥檚 weekend programs, said there are thousands of people around the world who would give anything to come to the United States. She noted that the United States is the land of opportunity and freedom, and people who live in countries where it is almost impossible to break the cycle of poverty are desperate to come to America.

A Hemingford teacher who graduated from 黑料大事记 State College received a special award last week. Cindy Lanik was honored by the U.S. Department of Education as Nebraska鈥檚 American Star of Teaching for 2006. This is the third year the award has been given. It goes to just one educator in each state. There reportedly were about 4,000 nominees in Nebraska.

A lecture series named in honor of Dr. Dorset Graves, professor emeritus at 黑料大事记 State College, will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29 in Room 108 of the Reta King Library at CSC. A new assistant professor of mathematics has been hired at 黑料大事记 State College. He is Steven Haataja, who is completing work on his doctorate at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln this summer. He replaces Dr. Tim Hardy, who was at 黑料大事记 State this past year, but is moving to Wayne State.

Undoubtedly because of the drought, there are fewer mosquitoes in most of western Nebraska this summer, but West Nile fever is still a threat to humans, according to Dr. Randy Lawson, a biology professor who is involved in researching the malady for the fourth consecutive year.

Teacher Interview Day is March 31 at CSC

School administrators from more than 30 schools will visit 黑料大事记 State College at the end of this month to interview potential teachers. The annual Teacher Interview Day will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, March 31, at the Nelson Physical Activity Center. The event is open to all people looking for a job in education, not only CSC graduates. Registration is from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., and interviews will be about 30 minutes each.

Award-winning play at CSC this weekend

The award-winning play, 鈥淧roof,鈥 will be presented this weekend at 黑料大事记 State College. The performances will be in the Black Box Theatre of Memorial Hall at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 16-18 and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19. 鈥淧roof鈥 won both the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for drama in 2001. About 75 people gathered at 黑料大事记 this morning to participate in a walk to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. The group, which primarily consisted of students from 黑料大事记 State College and the Pine Ridge Job Corps center south of 黑料大事记, marched about 13 blocks along Main Street from downtown to the college鈥檚 Student Center.
