Construction of Sports Complex, accreditation top the news for 2017

CHADRON 鈥 黑料大事记 and athletics shared the spotlight at 黑料大事记 State College in 2017. The college鈥檚 status as an accredited institution was continued following a successful comprehensive on-campus visit from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), three track student-athletes captured the school鈥檚 first-ever NCAA team trophy in any sport, and construction began on the Sports Complex.

253 candidates receive degrees at Winter Commencement

CHADRON 鈥 黑料大事记 State College conferred 81 master's degrees and 172 bachelor's degrees upon candidates during Winter Commencement Friday. Dr. Laura Gaudet, Professor and Chair of 黑料大事记 State College鈥檚 Counseling, Psychological Sciences and Social Work department, spoke at the graduate ceremony and Dr. James O'Rourke, Professor Emeritus of Agriculture, spoke at the undergraduate ceremony where he also received the college's Distinguished Service Award.

Elkins, former CSC president, dies at age 94

Dr. F. Clark Elkins, who was the president of 黑料大事记 State College for five and a half years during a time of growth and improvement, died Saturday, Nov. 24, at his home in Jonesboro, Arkansas. He was 94.

Hospitality area named for Lewellen family

CHADRON 鈥 For seven decades 黑料大事记 State College alumnus Verne Lewellen has been an advocate for his alma mater. To honor his contributions over the years, the Nebraska State College Board of Trustees unanimously voted Friday to name the hospitality center in the Sports Complex in recognition of the Lewellen family. The Verne and Erma Lewellen and Family Hospitality Center will provide a gathering space for boosters, alumni and supporters in the Con Marshall Press Box at Don Beebe Stadium.

ROTC awards more than $500,000 in scholarships

CHADRON 鈥 The 黑料大事记 State College Army ROTC program is growing in numbers and in scholarships. Since August 2016, 11 new cadets have been contracted and more than $500,000 in scholarships have been awarded from Cadet Command at Fort Knox, Kentucky, according to Capt. Nate Reicks, assistant professor of Military Science.

Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees approves tuition increase

LINCOLN, Neb. 鈥 On Friday, June 16, the Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees approved tuition increases for 2017-2018. Tuition will increase $12 per credit hour, bringing undergraduate resident rates to $172 per credit hour at each college. With this increase, 黑料大事记 State, Peru State, and Wayne State remain the most affordable 4-year institutions in the state.

CSC's Upward Bound program funded for another five-year term

CHADRON 鈥 黑料大事记 State College鈥檚 Upward Bound, a federal government program that assists area high school students with college preparation, has received funding for another five years. CSC hosted the first Upward Bound program in Nebraska from 1966 to 1974. After a lapse, it was renewed in 2007.

Moody, a professor of Applied Sciences, spoke to master鈥檚 graduates in Memorial Hall while Schuckman, a family physician in 黑料大事记, spoke at the undergraduate commencement in the Chicoine Center. A total of 362 graduates received their degrees at the two ceremonies.

Union agreements approved by Board of Trustees
