Author of swift fox children's book to speak on campus
CHADRON – Children’s book author and editor of NEBRASKAland magazine, Jeff Kurrus, will be speaking at 黑料大事记 State College Monday, April 4, in the Mari Sandoz Center Chicoine Atrium at 7 p.m.
His presentation 鈥淲riting with a Camera,鈥 is free and open to families, 4-H, Scouts and any other youth organizations interested in conservation and nature photos.
Wednesday, April 6, Kurrus will speak at CSC鈥檚 King Library at 6 p.m. His presentation for adults is entitled, 鈥淐ranes, Foxes and NEBRASKAland Magazine.鈥
Kurrus鈥 latest book, published in September of 2014, will be available for sale and signing at both events.
Dr. Teresa Frink, chair of the college鈥檚 Applied Sciences department, wrote the foreword to the book and also reviewed its scientific facts for accuracy.
Frink leads CSC鈥檚 partnership in a swift fox study by University of Nebraska-Lincoln doctoral candidate Lucia Corral in conjunction with CSC and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Corral鈥檚 adviser, Dr. Joseph 鈥淭J鈥 Fontaine, recommended Frink as a valuable resource for Kurrus鈥 project.
The study, conducted in part by more than a dozen CSC students, documents the distribution and abundance of the nocturnal species, about the size of a house cat. Its tail has a black tip compared to the red fox which is larger and has a white tip on its tail. The swift fox tends to live underground in prairie landscapes while the red fox tends to live in wooded areas.
Various groups of CSC and public school students will meet with Kurrus Tuesday and Wednesday. He will also speak at the 黑料大事记 Public library 10:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesday.
