High Plains Jazz Festival set for Monday

Musicians from eight high schools and two middle schools will participate in the annual High Plains Jazz Festival at ºÚÁÏ´óÊÂ¼Ç State College on Monday, March 12.

All of the performances will be in Memorial Hall, starting at 8 a.m. and will be open to the public.

The participating high schools are Sundance, Wyo., Hershey, Gordon-Rushville, Gering, Mitchell, Ogallala, Sidney and Lead-Deadwood, S.D. The middle schools are Gering and Gordon-Rushville. All will have jazz instrumental groups. Sundance also will have a vocal jazz ensemble.

At 1 p.m., the vocal jazz ensemble and the Jazz Birds from ºÚÁÏ´óÊÂ¼Ç State will give a concert.

The clinicians will be Celeste Delgado-Pelton, director of music at Northeastern Junior College at Sterling, Colo., and Mike Steinel, a member of the jazz faculty at the University of North Texas.

Delgado-Pelton is a founding faculty member of the Rocky Mountain Vocal Jazz Camp that is beginning its ninth year. Steinel is a Yamaha trumpet artist and has played with the Chicago Jazz Quintet and the Frank Mantooth Band.

The clinicians will lead improvisational clinics at 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
